Max and Moritz is a three-part set of salt and pepper shakers and a bowl designed by Wilhelm Wagenfeld . The set has been manufactured and sold by WMF since 1953 .

background

After studying, participating in the war and briefly teaching at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin , the Bauhaus student Wilhelm Wagenfeld worked in Stuttgart as a freelance designer for WMF, Rosenthal , Braun and Fürstenberg, among others . Already known beforehand for adapting the form to the needs and the practicality ( form follows function ), he designed mainly household items. In this context, Max und Moritz was created in 1952, which WMF began to mass-produce in 1953 and quickly became one of the most popular products in post-war Germany in the 1950s and 1960s. Sometimes they are also referred to as "WMF twins".

Profile of the set (2017)

These are two spice shakers made of glass and stainless steel , which stand in a bowl. The form is simple and clear. The body is kept completely in glass so that you can see the filling level at any time. The glass containers are provided with a waist, which ensures a firm grip. The glass body narrows towards the head and then widens again towards the lid, creating a neck. This aesthetic design also serves a functional purpose. During use, the spice is loosened up and clumping is prevented. The lid made of stainless steel is provided with a snap lock instead of a screw lock and only holds due to the tension of the metal. The perforation in the lid should allow the spices to be spread evenly. In contrast to many other twin shakers, the two shakers are largely identical, so that the spices can only be distinguished at first glance by their color. If you look closely at the closures, you will notice that the holes are differently dimensioned. The bowl is held in the shape of a boat.

From an ecological point of view, only two basic components were used, namely glass and Cromargan , as rust-free , acid-resistant stainless steel with 18% chromium and 10% nickel . Chromium makes the material rustproof, nickel makes it acid-proof and gives it a shine. For this purpose, composite materials were completely dispensed with. A more elaborately produced screw cap was also dispensed with. According to the "Lexicon of Sustainable Management", the following features of ecological design are anticipated even before they were officially presented as such: "Durable, repairable, dispensing with composite materials and plastics, completely recyclable, modern but not fashionable shape, time-resistant design and (... ) high functionality. “The new and at that time not yet common material for the lid also solved the problems of verdigris formation , which occurred more frequently in the previously common spreaders.

The household item was named after the two characters Max and Moritz by Wilhelm Busch .

Labelling

Underside of the shell (2017)

At the beginning, the words “WMF / CROMARGAN / GERMANY” were embossed on the underside of the bowl. In the meantime, the WMF logo and information about the material used and the edition are printed on the bottom.

Dimensions

The spreader set, which is sold in series, differs in its dimensions from the design by Wilhelm Wagenfeld. The execution was legitimized by Wagenfeld.

The dimensions of the set are 5 cm in height, 16.8 cm in width and 6 cm in depth. The spreaders are 4.5 cm in height and 4.6 cm in diameter.
