Maximilian Handel

Maximilian Handel (born September 14, 1889 in Hagenau , Upper Austria ; † May 10, 1966 there ) was an Austrian landowner and politician ( ÖVP ). Handel was a member of the Upper Austrian Parliament and from 1945 to 1949 a member of the National Council .

Life

Maximilian Sigismund Franz Anton Erasmus Rudolph Joseph Maria von Handel came from the Upper Austrian line of a Brabant family and was born as the son of Max Freiherr von Handel and Flora Freiin von Handel. Maximilian's father was the nephew of Erasmus von Handel and a cousin of the poet Enrica von Handel-Mazzetti .

Maximilian attended grammar school and served from 1914 to 1918 in the First World War, where he made it up to first lieutenant in the reserve. After the end of the war, he took over the management of the Hagenau Castle estate and in 1921 married Countess Mathilde zu Spaur and Flavon, with two daughters from the marriage. In 1919 he became mayor of Hagenau. From 1934 to 1938 he was a member of the state parliament in Upper Austria and, above all, in demand as a specialist in financial and budget matters. At the same time he also held the position of Gauleiter of the Fatherland Front in the Braunau district. Between December 19, 1945 and November 8, 1949, he was a member of the ÖVP in the National Council , and in 1945 also chairman of the district chamber of farmers .
