Hagenau Castle is a Renaissance castle in the municipality of St. Peter , Braunau am Inn district , Upper Austria . It stands next to the bay of the old Mattig estuary on a rock spur protruding towards the Inn .

history

A castle , which was located near today's castle , is first documented as property of the family who named it in 1088 ("Hartwicus de Hagenowe"). After the Upper Austrian line of the Hagenau family died out , it came to the bishops of Passau in 1152 , who gave it as a fief to a family of ministers who also named themselves after the castle. The most famous from Hagenau was Reginbert , Bishop of Passau, who died in the crusade in 1147. With Ludwig von Hagenau, however, this noble family also died out in 1262, so that the complex came into the possession of the Ortenburgers for a short time , and then to the Dukes of Bavaria.

The castle often changed hands, so it was owned by the Toerring (from 1270) and the Ahamer (around 1400). In 1525 they bought the Taimer zu Mühlheim and remained owners until 1635.

In 1571, the old castle was demolished because it had been badly damaged in several fires and floods. At the same time, today's castle was built on a flood-protected elevation. The damming of the Inn for the Frauenstein power plant now gives the wrong impression that it was planned as a moated castle .

In 1635, Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria gave the property to his personal physician Ferdinand Schütz. He had the brewery and stables built near the castle. The elector allowed him to use the title “from and to Hagenau and St. Peter”.

In 1710, Count Ferdinand Josef von Rheinstein and Tattenbach acquired the castle. Due to dilapidation, it had to be rebuilt from 1717 to 1728. In 1722 it came to Johann Franz Graf Franking and in 1829 to the barons of Handel by inheritance . Maximilian Handel converted Hagenau into a castle hotel, but this company was unsuccessful. After his death in 1966 the property went to his daughter Colette Spaur. This family still owns the castle today and had it restored in 2001 .

description

Today the building is used as a cultural center and for rental apartments. The castle is only accessible during the events as it is largely used privately. In the park of the castle there is a Gothic chapel consecrated to St. Nicholas in 1515 , which was rebuilt by Count Franking in 1727/28 due to dilapidation and is now used as an event room for concerts, among other things.

The corner towers give the renaissance castle a defiant appearance. In the inner courtyard there is a wrought iron ornate draw well. There used to be arbors above the arcades , but they were walled up. Above the entrance is the coat of arms of those of Handel.
