Maximos II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maximos II. , Greek Μάξιμος Β΄ († December 1216 ) was Patriarch of Constantinople in exile in Nikaia (1216).

Life

Maximos was abbot in the Akoimetoi monastery . He was the spiritual confidante of Emperor Theodoros I Laskaris . In June 1216 he was named Patriarch of Constantinople. Contemporary chroniclers ( Georgios Akropolites , Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopulos ) were very critical of him. He was uneducated, he had become a patriarch only because of his relationships with the women's apartments in the imperial palace. Maximos died in December 1216.
