Maximus of Alexandria
Maximus († 282 ) was Bishop of Alexandria as the successor of St. Dionysius .
Maximus was first presbyter in Alexandria under Dionysius, whom he then followed in 265 in the episcopate. The most important question of the eastern parishes in the late 260s was how to deal with Paul of Samosata , the bishop of Antioch ; the latter had come under fire for his views on Christology , and he was accused of denying the divine nature of Christ. In addition to the bishops of Jerusalem and Edessa, Maximus of Alexandria was also instrumental in the trial against Paul, which ultimately led to his removal.
Theonas succeeded Maximus in the episcopate in 282 . Maximus is venerated as a saint, his feast day is December 27th .
