Mazatenango is a city in Guatemala and has about 50,000 inhabitants. It is the administrative center of the departments of Suchitepéquez and the greater community ( municipality ) Mazatenango.

Location and climate

The city is located 165 km west of Guatemala City and about 20 km east of Retalhuleu between the Sierra Madre and the Pacific coast at an altitude of 371 m. From the capital, Mazatenango can be reached in about three hours via the modern CA 9 motorway and the CA 2 Pacific highway that branches off at Escuintla .

Mazatenango is located in the Pacific lowland region ( Costa Cuca ). The climate is tropical and hot. The rainy season lasts from May to October.

Economy and tourism

Mazatenango is the economic center of Suchitepéquez . The most important branch of the economy is agriculture and especially the cultivation and processing of sugar cane . During the carnival season , an industrial and livestock exhibition takes place in Mazatenango, which is of national importance.

Mazatenango is particularly known for its Carnival , which is usually celebrated for eight days in late February and early March.

history

Mazatenango became the administrative seat of the Suchitepéquez department on October 16, 1877 .
