McCarthy Buttress is a 1135 m high and rocky ridge of the Big Ben volcano on the island of Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It extends north from Davis Dome towards the Downes Glacier
It is named after James W. P. McCarthy, meteorologist for a 1950 campaign of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions to Heard Island.
