The McCarthy Inlet is an ice-covered bay in the southern Antarctic Weddell Sea . It is the largest and most northerly of the three bays on the east side of the Berkner Island, which is surrounded by the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf .
Scientists at Ellsworth Station in the United States discovered them during overflights and reconnaissance marches between 1957 and 1958. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1965 after Lieutenant Commander Charles J. McCarthy of the United States Navy Reserve Forces , commander of the VX-6 squadron the Ellsworth Station at that time.
