Gago is a renowned actor who seldom puts himself in the foreground. However, the Portuguese public mostly perceives him as a striking telenovela face and he occasionally appears in the gossip columns, for example after his brief hospital stay in 2016.

In professional circles he was noticed as a lively theater actor and as a talented film actor in supporting roles in Portugal and occasionally also in France, but remained rather unfortunate with his first leading role in Solo de Violino (1990, directed by Monique Rutler ) and was rarely cast in leading roles afterwards.
