McCarthy Island is a 4 km long and 3 km wide island off the coast of the East Antarctic Kemplands . It is located immediately northeast of Foldøya .
Based on aerial photographs taken during the Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37, Norwegian cartographers mistakenly believed it was part of Foldøya. A team of geologists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) identified it as a separate island in 1961. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named them after the petrologist W. R. McCarthy, who was involved in the analysis of the ANARE rock collections.
