The Mearns Luzon rat ( Tryphomys adustus ) is a rodent from the group of old world mice (Murinae).

The dense, shaggy fur of the Mearns Luzon rats is dark brown on the upper side, the underside is white-gray. Their physique is stocky, the long hind legs have strikingly large claws, and the tail is relatively short. The animals reach a head body length of 13 to 17 centimeters, in addition there is a 13 to 16 centimeter long tail.

This species occurs exclusively on the Philippines island of Luzon , where it lives in humid habitats, including rice fields. Otherwise nothing is known about their way of life.

There are only very few finds of this type, so their degree of endangerment is accordingly unclear. The IUCN lists them under “too little data available” ( data deficient ).
