The Mechanics Bay is a 1.5 km wide bay on the north coast of the island Heard . It is located immediately east of Saddle Point .
The name of the bay goes back to American seal hunters. Captain Erasmus Darwin Rogers (1817-1906) probably named the bay after the schooner Mechanics , the Corinthian's escort ship , with which he first called the island in March 1855.
