The Mechanics Bay is a deep bay on the western edge of the Amery Ice Shelf off the Lars Christensen Coast of the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Lands .
Aerial photographs were taken in 1956 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE). An ANARE team led by geodesist David Robert "Dave" Carstens (* 1934) explored them in 1962 while driving a Sno-Cat tracked vehicle. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named the bay in memory of that event.
