Mechtild Rothe

Mechtild Rothe (born August 10, 1947 in Paderborn ) is a German SPD politician . She was a member of the European Parliament from 1984 to 2009 .

Life

Mechtild Rothe grew up in Bad Lippspringe . After completing secondary school , she first worked in her father's architecture office and later as a chemical laboratory assistant. In 1974 Rothe began studying. First she studied German and chemistry for teaching and then social sciences . From 1978 to 1984 Rothe worked as a secondary school teacher.

Mechtild Rothe has been a member of the SPD since 1970 and was active there at various levels of the party. At times she was also a member of the city ​​council of Bad Lippspringe. From 1984 she was a member of the European Parliament . Until 1994, the focus of her work there was agricultural policy , since then Rothe has devoted herself particularly to energy policy, particularly renewable energies and energy efficiency. She has also been rapporteur for the European Parliament on several occasions. Since the beginning of its parliamentary work, a foreign policy focus has remained on Cyprus policy. Between 1999 and 2004 Rothe chaired the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee. With the sixth legislative period and the accession of Cyprus to the EU, there was no longer a Joint Parliamentary Committee between the EU and Cyprus. Nonetheless, one of her political priority areas remained Cyprus, the solution to the Cyprus conflict and, in connection with it, the EU policy on Turkey.

For the European elections on June 13, 2004, Rothe was put up again as a candidate, on the promising position 2 on the SPD list and re-elected to parliament. On January 16, 2007 she was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament on the occasion of the upcoming election of the Presidium. With the election she gave up her function as deputy chairwoman of the SPD group.
