Mecinus pyraster (also gray plantain Schlankrüssler ) is a species of beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The brown-black weevils are 2.8-4 mm long. They have an elongated cylindrical body. The pronotum is as wide as the elytra . The wing covers are covered with white hairs that stick out slightly, especially at the wing cover tips. The relatively short rostrum (trunk) is strongly curved. The tarsi are lightened reddish.

distribution

Mecinus pyraster occurs in large parts of Europe. In the British Isles , the species occurs in England and Wales. The distribution extends in the east to Central Asia . The species was introduced in North America.

Way of life

The adult beetles can be observed especially in spring on various plantain trees ( Plantago ), especially ribwort plantain ( P. lanceolata ), which are their host plants. The larvae develop in the root neck of the plants.
