Meckermann
The Meckermann is a small statue that stands in Langenbergpark in Bocholt . The grumbler - with a raised chin and a disapproving face - represents a sullen philistine . At his feet are a goat , a reference to the grumbling, and a cat as a symbol of vigilance and protection from "pests".
The original 1938 figure was made of stone by Eugen Severt , but was destroyed in 1945 or 1946. In 1951 Hermann ("Manes") Schlatt created the new Meckermann. This figure was stolen on August 28, 2011. A little later a local newspaper donated the money for a reconstruction of the statue based on the original forms by Hermann Schlatt, which Detlef Lorei now made of stone, also to prevent theft by metal thieves . The third Meckermann was inaugurated on January 19, 2012 in a small celebration.
The statue should give the park visitors rules of conduct. The character of the Meckermann in Bocholt is also known as the mascot of a column in the local newspaper Bocholter-Borkener Volksblatt . The column describes small everyday events in Bocholt, rarely satirical, mostly rather conservative and moralizing, and thus remains entirely on the line of the Meckermann as a petty-bourgeois moral apostle.
