Hermann Schlatt

Hermann "Manes" Schlatt (born January 21, 1910 in Bocholt ; † December 1, 2004 ) was a German sculptor and dialect writer.

Schlatt studied sculpture and graphics at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Münster from 1929 to 1932. He then started his own business as a freelance artist in Bocholt. He later continued his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He was a soldier in World War II and was taken prisoner by the Soviets, where he remained until 1949.

In parallel to his independent work, he worked as an art teacher at the St. Georg Gymnasium in Bocholt from 1968 to 1975, and from 1964 to 1989 he gave courses in clay modeling at the adult education center.

As a sculptor, he became known in his hometown of Bocholt through numerous works, many of which are in municipal ownership. One of the best-known works is his redesign of the Meckermann statue in Langenbergpark .

In addition to his work as a sculptor, he also wrote texts in West Munsterland dialect.

Schlatt lived in Bocholt with his wife Anna until his death in 2004.

Schlatt also played a key role in the reconstruction of the Bocholt historical town hall in the 1950s.
