The buzz cut or crew cut , as Stiftelkopf familiar, is a short hair cut, cut in which all the hair in the same hair length. He is not to be confused with bald shaves ( Bald ). The namesake of the hairstyle is the hedgehog Mecki , a cartoon character from the magazine Hörzu .

A fixed length of hair is not defined, as a rule it is between 0.5 and 3 cm. The hairstyle is only suitable for straight hair, as the hair should always stick out evenly from the head without tools. It is mostly cut with a hair clipper with the help of a comb. However, some hairdressers also cut with hair scissors, especially if the customer wants a longer hair length.

The haircut became popular mainly through the GIs in post-war Germany. Like all military short haircuts, the haircut is particularly easy to care for.

In the 1980s , the hedgehog cut was often worn in variations with slightly longer hair on the back or with a central “hair tail”, sometimes with bangs falling far into the face , and often stabilized with hair gel or mousse .
