Appearance and wearing style

The bronze , silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 31.5 mm shows a raised, embossed fire helmet in the center of its obverse in front of two crossed fire fighting axes . Above it is the inscription: FOR LOYALTY SERVICES , which make up about 1/4 of the circumference. The rest is filled by two curved laurel branches that are crossed at the bottom and open at the top. In contrast, the reverse of the medal shows the GDR's national coat of arms in the middle.

The medal was worn on a 25 × 12 mm red clasp on the upper left side of the chest. A 6 mm wide red stripe has been woven into the ribbon on both sides, 3 mm from the hem. To differentiate between the different levels, the border of the gold medal consists of a 3 mm wide gold border, and of the silver medal a white border. The bronze step has no edge. The ribbon for the medal for 40 years of service is the same, but has a miniature medal in the middle of the ribbon in addition to the gold stripes. The interim clasp was the same as the ribbon.
