The medal for faithful service in the health and social services was a national award from the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which on 15 November 1973 in three stages, bronze , silver and gold was donated, and the first time on health care days of the GDR on 11 December of the same year was awarded 230,000 times. The award took place after a certain number of years of service:

  • for 30 years of service in gold
  • for 20 years of service in silver and
  • for 10 years of service in bronze.

They were awarded to all employees of the health and social services in the GDR for their constant readiness for action and their services in the service of the health and life of GDR citizens. Also for veterans of the industry, if they had met the award conditions before leaving the work process.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze, silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows a raised, embossed Aesculapian staff in the center of its obverse , which is enclosed by two open laurel branches that are crossed at the bottom and bent upwards. The following inscription reads: FOR LOYALTY MERIT (above) and HEALTH AND SOCIAL WORK (below). The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the small state coat of arms of the GDR in the middle, which is surrounded by the inscription: GERMAN DEMOKRATISCHE (above) and REPUBLIK . This inscription is also enclosed by open laurel branches that are crossed at the bottom and bent upwards, but which do not touch at the top. The medal was worn on a 25 × 11.5 mm white covered clasp, the hem of which forms a blue vertical stripe 2 mm wide on both sides. The distinction of the awarded level was also shown on the ribbon, so the gold level for 30 years of service was provided with a 4 mm wide golden vertical woven central stripe, the silver level with a corresponding silver stripe of the same width and the bronze level had none. Otherwise, the ribbon corresponded to the interim clasp.
