Medal for Faithful Service in Civil Aviation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The medal for loyal service in civil aviation was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on September 13, 1962 in three stages, bronze , silver or gold and expanded to six stages with a special stage from 1978. They were awarded after a certain number of years of service. In detail this meant:

  • from 1978
    • For 40 years of service, honor bar for the gold medal (men)
    • for 35 years of service, honor bar for the gold medal (women)
    • for 30 years of service in gold level III
    • for 20 years of service in gold level II
    • for 15 years of service in gold level I.
    • for 10 years of service in silver and
    • for 5 years of service in bronze.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze, silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows on its obverse the outline of an airplane from above. This is surrounded by the inscription: FÜR TREUE DIENSTE ( above) and ZIVILE AVIATION (below), each interrupted by a point. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the GDR's national coat of arms. The medal was worn on a rectangular, blue-covered clasp in the highest level. Corresponding to the level awarded, a 0.6 mm wide vertical central stripe is woven in on the left and right, 1.5 mm from the hem, in the color of the corresponding level, golden-yellow, silver or bronze. Three stripes in gold therefore stand for the award of the gold medal, one in bronze for the lowest level. The gold-plated honor bar is 50 mm wide and shows a round middle section with a stylized aircraft outline from above. Similar to the bar of honor for the medal for loyal service to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , the ends each consist of two short laurel branches, each with six leaves with fruits, which point outwards to the left and right of the central part. Usually the bar of honor was put on over the gold medal.
