The Medgaz pipeline, also known as the Hassi R'Mel – Almería gas pipeline , is a 757-kilometer natural gas pipeline that runs between the Hassi R'Mel gas field in Algeria and mainland Spain on the Almería coast .

history

The first ideas for building a direct gas pipeline between Algeria and Europe emerged in the 1970s. However, the technical restrictions at that time prevented the construction and operation of a gas pipeline in deep water.

In 2001 the Medgaz Pipeline Company was founded. The feasibility study was carried out in the years 2002-2003 by the “Sociedad para el Estudio y construir el gasoducto Argelia-Europa, vía España, SA”.

Construction began on March 7, 2008 in Almería. The relocation of the submarine route was completed in December 2008. The pipeline was officially opened on March 1, 2011 and connected to the Spanish continuing gas pipeline Almería – Albacete . The underwater section was approved and certified by “Lloyd's Register España SA”.

Technical specifications

The length of the Algerian pipeline that runs overland is 547 kilometers and the offshore section that leads from the Algerian coastal town of Béni Saf to the beach on the Spanish side of Almería is 210 kilometers long, the deepest point is 2160 meters. The pipe diameter of the land pipeline is 48 inches (1220 mm) and the pipes in the deep water are 24 inches (610 mm) in diameter. The transport volume is around 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

The pipes were supplied by Nippon Steel and the compressor system was built by Dresser-Rand . The pipeline ship was Castoro Sei and the Saipem 7000 was used as a work ship.

Project partner

The estimated total costs of the project were given as around EUR 900 million, including EUR 630 million for the offshore area.
