The mediaWays GmbH in 1996 as a joint venture of Bertelsmann and debis Systemhaus in Gütersloh been set up for AOL set up a dial-up network in Germany. In the period that followed, this dial-up network was also used by other providers, including a. from CompuServe , RTL and Lycos with their Comundo service . Corporate customers such as Toyota and Bertelsmann were also connected to the network. Server services were established in the portfolio as a further pillar, so mediaWays operated the web portals of RTL , Spiegel Online , Focus and other services for end customers of dial-up services, such as mail servers and home page servers.

In 2000 debis was taken over by Telekom . In order to avoid cartel restrictions (mediaWays, as a reseller in the narrowband market, the main Internet access product at that time, as the second largest provider after Telekom, had a 35 percent market share), the mediaWays shares were sold. The shares were taken over by Bertelsmann.

In the middle of 2000 mediaWays expanded to Great Britain in order to also set up a dial-up network for AOL there.

In February 2001 Telefónica took over mediaWays completely for 1.6 billion US dollars .

In May 2001 mediaWays took over the hosting service provider Paderlinx .

In February 2003 the company was merged with HighwayOne , which was taken over by Telefónica Data in February 2002 , and renamed Telefónica Deutschland GmbH .
