The Medinetz Dresden e. V. is a human rights initiative in Dresden , which provides anonymous and free medical help for refugees and migrants without residence status . It is one of around 20 media networks and offices in Germany.

society

The association is an independent network that includes doctors, psychotherapists, midwives, interpreters and medical students. It is from the Dresden student group of the International Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War, Doctors in Social Responsibility e. V. (IPPNW) and founded in 2005. Medinetz members refer patients without papers to doctors, hospitals or midwives who may treat them free of charge. The network also (partially) finances more costly treatments such as births or operations through donations raised by the members themselves. In 2007 and 2008, for example, the association organized a cabaret evening. Part of the income went to the initiative itself.

The association protects the patient from deportation by authorities not be involved in the treatment process and thus the reporting obligation is eliminated. To this end, the association works with more than 70 resident doctors and two midwives. Patient contact with Medinetz Dresden is usually made through other initiatives, refugee councils and the immigration council. The referral to doctors takes place via a weekly consultation hour or a switched standby phone. Members of the association also organize interpreters for the patients and accompany them to the doctor's appointment.

In 2009, the Radeburg NPD city councilor Simon Richter filed a criminal complaint against Medinetz Dresden for “aiding and abetting illegal residence”. In 2010, Medinetz Dresden was the sponsor of the exhibition No man is illegal , in which pictures showed “the everyday life of people without official papers in Germany”.

Currently (2016) Medinetz Dresden has around 10 active members, mainly medical students, some doctors and a lawyer.

Awards

In 2009, the association was awarded the Saxon Prize for Democracy from among 55 applicants , which is endowed with 15,000 euros. The jury's statement said that “the selfless commitment to alleviating the plight of refugees and undocumented immigrants […] is admirable”.

In 2011, one representative of the association received the Reader's Digest award "Honorary Post of the Year", endowed with 5000 euros , and another was voted one of the "Dresdeners of the Year" in the same year.
