Training opportunities

Training in Germany

The full-time training at a technical school lasts two years (four semesters) and is offered by several technical schools or professional academies in the Federal Republic of Germany . Universities of applied sciences offer u. a. the course "Medical Technology / Hospital Operating Technology / Process Engineering". It includes u. a. the subjects of medical technology, medical IT, hospital technology, anatomy and physiology, medical technology, laboratory technology, hygiene, physics, chemistry, data processing and network technology, microprocessor technology, control, measurement and regulation technology, electrical engineering, English, legal and regulatory studies, business administration / economics, technical mathematics, MPR, including internships.

At the end of the training, the presentation of the technician's work forms an essential part of the final examination before the district government. This is generally a practical as well as theoretical task of your choice , but it can also be an internship lasting several weeks in the technology department of a hospital of your own choice, in which you sit in, and about which a meaningful internship report is to be drawn up and presented to the examination board (will be, among other things not recognized in Lower Saxony as an FH admission). The recognized FH degree thus entitles you to study at a university of applied sciences .

The majority of medical technicians in Germany do not consist of state-certified technicians, but of those who have undergone further training over many years in their work in medical technology, through training at the manufacturers of medical technology and through attending courses, seminars and conferences. The Fachverband Biomedizinische Technik eV offers its members voluntary certification.

Training in Austria

In Austria there is the possibility of completing a five-year training course as part of a technical training at a higher technical institute with a focus on biomedical technology. After three years of professional experience, the title of engineer can be applied for. The training in Austria corresponds to training at a technical college in Germany.

Field of activity

The professional field of activity of the medical technician is very different, complex and versatile in z. B. here are just some of the areas presented: at the manufacturer of medical products, as a service technician on site at the customer, in sales, development, further development or adaptation to new specifications of e.g. B. devices or analysis techniques, in the field of applied medical technology as a logistician , head of the MT clinic. The list of possibilities for MT remains only as an example; it is by no means complete and will be expanded in the course of technical developments, e.g. B. Research. Furthermore, the medical technician carries out the legally prescribed safety controls (STK) and metrological controls (MTK) on medical products.

Qualifications and duties

The medical technician is thus a qualified specialist for one or more medical products from the respective manufacturer and knows the currently relevant laws and regulations as well as work instructions for handling medical products ( MPG , until 2002 MedGV ; MPBetreibV ). An increasingly important task of the medical technician is to keep the clinic operators, users, nurses and doctors informed about the risks of operating the medical device.
