It is 3000  m long and 1500  m wide. In the middle of the strait is a reef that forces passing ships to cross the strait on either the north or south bank. The tidal current here reaches a speed of four to five knots . Sailboats often wait in the bay of Camaret-sur-Mer for the most favorable time to pass.

Since Brest has been one of the most important military ports in France since the middle of the 17th century, the Strait of Brest is of great strategic importance. For their defense, military structures such as the fortress of Bertheaume were built on both banks .
