The marine reserve Batiquitos Lagoon is a protected marine area in San Diego County on the southern coast of California . It is part of the Batiquitos Lagoon , a coastal tidal wetland area that is within the city limits of Carlsbad and is adjacent to Encinitas . This marine reserve covers around 3,218 kilometers.

history

The Batiquitos Lagoon marine reserve was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 1983. It is one of 36 new marine protected areas approved by the California Department for Fish and Wildlife in December 2010 in the third phase of the marine life conservation initiative. This initiative is a collaborative public process to create a statewide network of protected areas along the California coast. The new marine protected areas have been designated by local divers, fishermen, conservationists and scientists who make up the southern coast's regional interest group. Your job is to create a network of protected areas that preserves sensitive marine life and habitats while improving recreational, study and educational opportunities. The marine protected areas on the south coast have existed since the laws came into force in 2012.

Protective activities

Fishing of all living marine resources is prohibited within the Batiquitos Lagoon Marine Reserve. This excludes operations and maintenance removals, habitat restoration, research and training, maintenance dredging, and maintenance of man-made structures within the reserve as required by state, state, and local permits or activities required under Section 630, or otherwise agency approved activities. Boating, swimming, wading and diving are prohibited in the nature reserve.

Geography and location

The Batiquitos Lagoon Marine Reserve comprises the waters below the mean tide line within Batiquitos Lagoon east of the Interstate Highway 5 bridge.

The Encinitas coastline and the nearby towns of Cardiff and Solana Beach have ocean-view walking trails for cycling. Swami's beach is connected with several kilometers of connected beaches, from the influence of the San Elijo lagoon to the jetty on South Carlsbad beach. The area is popular for hiking and jogging.

Habitat and wildlife

This area protects important estuary habitats and related species. The habitat types include open water / tidal, tidal Wadden Sea, salt marshes on the south coast, brackish meadows on the coast, nesting areas, transition zones and alluvial forests in the southern riparian forest area of ​​the Salix lasiolepis willow species. The dominant flora includes seagrass, swamp samphire and white sage. The dominant fauna includes striped mullet, great egret, horn snail, raccoon, wood rat, skunk and ground squirrel.

Scientific monitoring

Under the Marine Life Protection Act, selected marine protected areas along California's south coast are monitored by scientists to keep an eye on their effectiveness and learn more about the health of the oceans. Similar studies in marine sanctuaries off the Santa Barbara's Channel Islands have already found gradual improvements in fish size and numbers.
