Sea saga

As sea forecast in are folklore tradition substances referred that are thematically linked to the sea.

From sailor say is when we assume or can demonstrate that the carriers of the tradition sailors were. It cannot automatically be assumed that a sea legend has its origin among seafarers, much is already found in ancient literature, has migrated from there to the medieval chronicles and collections - Konrad von Megenberg mentions twenty different types of sea wonders in his book of nature - and from there to the seamen. A sailor from Mecklenburg confirms this: "From sea maidens, mihr von de Landlüd 'was segged, not from us Seelüd'."

Richard Wossidlo divides the sea legends into three groups:

  • Legends that were presumably passed down through ancient, Arabic or medieval literature. Examples are Magnetberg , Lebermeer and Mermaids .
  • Sagas associated with specific places. Examples: Origin of Bornholm , the old man from Kap Kullen, NeuwerkInsel Neuwerk , Sundriese. Since there is actually no fixed place at sea, these local legends are linked by their nature to land-based tradition.
  • Sailor legends. Examples: Flying Dutchman , Klabautermann

If one wants to emphasize the lack of credibility of a tradition, one also speaks derogatory of seaman's thread .
