The scourger ( Megaceryle lugubris ) is one of the largest kingfishers on the Asian continent. Four subspecies are known: Megaceryle lugubris lugubris , Megaceryle lugubris continentalis, Megaceryle lugubris guttualata , Megaceryle lugubris pallida .
features
The scourger reaches a size of 43 cm. He wears a conspicuous comb. Its plumage is mottled gray and white. His chest and throat are white. The male has a narrow reddish collar, while the female has a reddish color on the front part of the underside of the wings.
Occurrence
The scourger occurs on the Japanese islands, in Korea , as well as in central China to the Himalayas . A typical habitat for this bird are mountain streams. It feeds mainly on fish and crabs.
