Megalonotus emarginatus is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .
features
The bugs are 5.4 to 7.1 millimeters long, making them the largest representatives of their genus in Central Europe. Like all representatives of the genus, they have a darkly colored pronotum, especially roughly dotted at the back . The thighs ( femora ) of the front legs have one long and several small teeth. Megalonotus emarginatus can be identified by the fact that its pronotum is covered with long, upright hairs. In addition, the back corners of the pronotum are widened and angled sharply backwards. The edge of the similar Megalonotus chiragra is only evenly curved. In addition, the splints ( tibia ) of Megalonotus emarginatus are pale in color.
distribution and habitat
The species is widespread in the Mediterranean area and particularly invades the Atlantic-influenced part of Central Europe to the north. In the east, their distribution extends over Asia Minor to the Caucasus region. In Germany it is rare and only occurs in the south, where individual finds from Thuringia and the south of Lower Saxony are known. In Austria it is found sporadically in the east and south. In Great Britain it occurs locally in the south. Which habitats the species colonizes is unknown, as it was recently separated from Megalonotus chiragra . Apparently, warm and dry habitats are populated with sand, but especially limestone soil.
Way of life
The way of life of the animals and a possible attachment to certain food plants is also unknown until now.
