Johann Peter Meinhardt Bredt (born April 22, 1758 in Barmen (today part of Wuppertal ); † February 28, 1840 there ) was Elberfeld's mayor .

Life

Bredt was born the son of the Barmer factory owner Johann Kaspar Bredt (1691–1772) and his wife Johanna Maria Gertrud Coenen (1714–1789). Eight days after his birth he was baptized in Barmen-Gemarke. In 1788 he married Katharina Wilhelmina Frowein (1763-1823), with whom he had twelve children. His wife's family included a manufacturer from Elberfeld, which is why Bredt concentrated his business on Elberfeld. The merchant was elected mayor of Elberfeld in 1795 and was the city judge on a rotating basis the following year . He was then a member of the city council from 1797 to 1799. From June 16, 1800 to December 31, 1807 he was a lay judge at the city court.

After retiring from his business in old age, he lived again for the last years of his life in his hometown of Barmen, where he died in 1840.
