Meir Cohen ( Hebrew מאיר כהן, Born November 15, 1955 in Mogador , Morocco ) is an Israeli politician ( Yesch Atid ). From March 2013 to May 2015 he was Minister of Welfare and Social Affairs in Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet .

Life

Cohen was born in Morocco in 1955 and came to Israel with his family in 1962. The family lived in Jerocham for a year , then in Dimona . Cohen did his military service in the Israeli Paratrooper Brigade and fought in the Yom Kippur War .

After his military service, Cohen attended Ben Gurion University in the Negev , where he studied Jewish history and philosophy. After earning his bachelor's degree , Cohen completed a master's degree in Jewish studies at the Schechter Institute . He worked as a teacher and was eventually headmaster in Dimona. Cohen became a member of Jisra'el Beitenu and was elected mayor of his hometown in 2003. In 2008 he was confirmed in office. In October 2012 he joined Yesch Atid and ran for the elections to the 19th Knesset on list number 4 of his party. He was elected to the Knesset in February 2013 and appointed Minister for Welfare and Social Affairs.

In May 2013, Cohen caused a sensation when, contrary to the official government position, he advocated an immediate abandonment of the isolated Israeli settlements in the West Bank .

Cohen is married with three children.
