Jerocham , also Yeroham ( Hebrew ירוחם) is a local association in southern Israel in the north of the Negev desert . The next bigger city is Dimona .

history

Jerocham was founded on January 9, 1951, almost three years after the establishment of the State of Israel (1948) as a development city and was primarily intended to serve as a housing estate for the workers of the nearby phosphate plants.

The first immigrants came from Romania . Most of the population is of North African and Indian descent. The well-known Israeli film End of the World, Left is a direct allusion to the relationship between Indian and North African immigrants during the founding period of Yeroham (without ever mentioning the city). The film is also about a game of cricket . In fact, cricket is very popular in Yeroham, although the sport is severely underdeveloped in Israel.

Until 1965, Yeroham was on the main road to Eilat . When the new road through the Arava Valley was built, the village lost through traffic, which had a negative impact on its development. Despite the earlier funding and the influx of new immigrants (around 2000 between 1990 and 2002), the city is growing slowly. On December 31, 2004, it had only reached 8,700 inhabitants, which is partly due to its isolated location in the northern Negev.

economy

There are several large industrial plants in Yeroham that manufacture glass bottles, medicines, food and cosmetics.

The tourism hardly matters, though, there are three points of interest close to the city:

  • The "Great Crater" (haMachtesch haGadol / Machtesch Chatira), the second largest erosion crater in the Negev desert. The crater represents a geological window . In it you can find petrified trees and coral reefs , as well as colored sandstone formations.
  • The Yeroham Park with a large reservoir . This is where the winter floods and the city's treated wastewater are dammed.
  • Several small archaeological sites, mostly from the Byzantine period.

politics

Amram Mitzna was the city's mayor from 2005 to 2011 . The former mayor of Haifa and chairman of the Avoda was sent to Yerocham to financially rehabilitate the city after it was on the verge of bankruptcy . His predecessor Baruch Elmakayes had previously been dismissed from the Ministry of the Interior because of financial problems . Michael Biton is his successor.
