Meiram Smaghulow

Meiram Achmedijanuly Smaghulow ( Kazakh Мейрам Ахмедиянұлы Смағұлов , Russian Мейрам Ахмедиянович Смагулов ; born April 23, 1962 in Saran , Kazakh SSR ) is a Kazakh politician.

Life

Meiram Smaghulow was born in Saran in 1963 . He graduated from Karaganda Polytechnic Institute in 1984. In 2005 he received another degree from the Academy of Economics and Statistics in Almaty .

After graduating from college, Smaghulow worked in business for a long time. Until 1992 he worked for the construction company Trest Karagandaschilstroi. Afterwards he worked for the city administration of his hometown Saran and was from 1993 first deputy Äkim (mayor) of the city. From July 2003 to January 2009 Smaghulow was Äkim of Saran. He then worked for the regional administration of the Karagandy Region . On October 8, 2012, he was appointed Äkim of the city of Karagandy . He resigned from his post on June 24, 2014.

On October 2, 2014, Smaghulow was arrested for abuse of power . During his time as Äkim von Qaraghandy, he had his private home renovated by the Yutex company at the expense of the government's affordable housing program. In addition to Smaghulow, there were a number of other politicians against whom corruption allegations were made. These included Serik Akhmetov , former Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, and Bauyrshan Abbdishev , former Akim of the Karagandy region. At the end of 2015, he was sentenced to three years in prison. A short time later, his term was reduced to two years and he was released on parole on March 31, 2016.
