Master of the Baroncelli Portraits
A Dutch painter who worked in Bruges in Flanders around 1489 is referred to as the master of the Baroncelli portraits ( Italian Maestro dei Ritratti Baroncelli) . The artist, who is not known by name, was given his emergency name after the portraits he created of Pierantonio Baroncelli and his wife Maria Bonciani. The painter created these two pictures in oil on wood. They depict Baroncelli, an Italian banker who worked for the Medici banking house in Bruges , and his wife. The two Baroncelli portraits were probably a diptych and have been in the Uffizi in Florence since 1845 and 1843 . On the reverse is the scene of an Annunciation to Mary .
In addition to the Baroncelli portraits, a few other surviving works are ascribed to the master by comparing styles. The master's painting style is reminiscent of that of his contemporary Hans Memling, who worked in Bruges, and that of Peter Christ, who also worked in Bruges a little earlier . The master of the Baroncelli portraits is a contemporary of the master of the Lucia legend .
