James Lisle Gillis (1859)

James Lisle Gillis (born October 2, 1792 in Hebron , Washington County , New York , †  July 8, 1881 in Mount Pleasant , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Gillis attended public schools in his home country and then worked as a tanner. He served in the American armed forces during the British-American War of 1812 . In 1822 he moved to Ridgway , Pennsylvania. In 1842 he became an associate judge in Jefferson County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1840 and 1851 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; In 1845 he was a member of the State Senate . In the meantime he worked as a postal agent in San Francisco ( California ). He then returned to Pennsylvania.

In the congressional elections of 1856 Gillis was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded David Barclay on March 4, 1857 . Since he was not confirmed in 1858, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

At the end of his time, James Gilles was appointed Indian agent with the Pawnee tribe . He died on July 8, 1881 in Mount Pleasant, where he was also buried.
