Master of the Gardner Annunciation

As a master of the Gardner Annunciation ( Engl. Master of the Gardner Annunciation), the unnamed certainly well-known Italian painter called that in 1480 the image of an Annunciation painted. The picture is now in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. A few other works and frescoes from Umbria could be ascribed to the master by comparing styles with this work, which is now called the Gardner Annunciation after its location .

According to documents still in existence, the picture of the Annunciation was commissioned by the Santissima Annunziata monastery near Amelia , near Terni in Umbria, probably to a local artist. Therefore, the master's workshop can be presumed near Amelia or Terni. The picture was then to be found in the monastery until 1872, was sold and came into the collection of Isabella Stewart Gardner in 1900 as a work by Fiorenza di Lorenzo. In the thirties it was assigned to an independent painter from Umbria, now called Maestro dell'Annunciazione Gardner in Italian , by whom a few other works were also included in a catalog of works, such as Madonna pictures in Baltimore or Berlin.

The style of the master of the Gardner Annunciation is initially reminiscent of Fiorenzo di Lorenzo or Pietro Perugino , both leading painters of the Umbrian school. Later works show the influence of the Romanesque school of the early Renaissance .

The identity of the Master of the Gardner Annunciation cannot be determined with certainty. There were Antoniazzo Romano or Fiorenzo di Lorenzo suggested itself. After the discovery of a contract document from 1483, Piermatteo Lauro de Manfredi († around 1508) from Amelia is usually accepted as the painter of the Gardner Annunciation.
