Antoniazzo Romano

Antoniazzo Romano , actually Antonio di Benedetto Aquilio degli Aquili (* 1430, † 1508 or 1512) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance . He is considered one of the most important representatives of the "Roman School" of the early Renaissance .

life and work

At the beginning of his career Antoniazzo was under the influence of Fra Angelico , Benozzo Gozzoli , but especially Piero della Francesca and Melozzo da Forlì . The first works were the Madonna del Latte (1464) in Rieti and a triptych for the Church of San Francesco in Subiaco (1467). Together with Melozzo da Forlì, Antoniazzo worked on the fresco painting of the Bessarion Chapel in the Basilica of Santi XII Apostoli in Rome between 1464 and 1465 :

In 1475 he worked in the Vatican Palace with Domenico Ghirlandaio and later with Melozzo da Forlì. Together with Perugino he worked in the Sistine Chapel . The frescoes in the presbytery of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Tivoli were created around 1483 . One of the most famous works by Antoniazzo Romano is the altarpiece Cardinal Torquemada presents the Madonna's maid of wisdom in the Cappella dell'Annunziata of the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva (1500):

The frescoes of the Crucifixion, Annunciation, Saints Onofrio and Girolamo, Saint Augustine, the Descent from the Cross, John the Baptist and other saints in the Chamber of Saint Catherine in the Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome are attributed to Antoniazzo Romano and his students :

Other works in Rome are Saint Anne herself in San Pietro in Montorio , frescoes in the apse of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and on the ciborium in the Lateran basilica , as well as the Annunciation in Sant'Onofrio al Gianicolo . In the Castello Orsini-Odescalchi in Bracciano , he and his students created the almost 40 square meter fresco Il Trionfo di Gentile Orsini.
