The late medieval sculptor who created seven sandstone reliefs in Cologne Cathedral donated by Victor von Carben around 1500 is called the master of the von Carbene Memorial Foundation or Victor von Carben-Meister . The artist, who is not known by name, worked in the first quarter of the 16th century and had his workshop in the Cologne area or in Cologne itself.

Works

  • The figures of the Carbene Memorial Foundation. It is about an Anna selbdritt , the saints Barbara, Joachim, Joseph and Katharina as well as an annunciation group, which are on pillars at the Marienkapelle in the Cologne cathedral.
  • The sandstone group of figures of the Entombment of Christ in the south aisle of the Essen Minster is also attributed to the master .
  • In the Essen Cathedral Treasury there is a relief from the hand of the master depicting the adoration of the Magi
  • It is also possible that a wooden Madonna and Child came from the master and came to the monastery of St. Joseph of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus in Simpelveld via the art trade in the 19th century .

identification

It is possible that the master of the von Carbene Memorial Foundation is identical to the sculptor Wilhelm von Arborch, who can be traced back to Cologne between 1506 and 1533 . Another Cologne sculptor of the time, Johann Spee , is occasionally suggested as an identity.
