Master of the Bargello Tondo

Bargello tondo

A painter of the Italian Early Renaissance who probably worked in Florence between 1400 and 1450 is referred to as the master of the Bargello-Tondo or the master of the judgment of Paris in the Bargello .

The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after the desco da parto he painted , a midwife bowl that is kept in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. A round picture (Italian: tondo) shows the judgment of Paris . The mythological theme of contemplation “about the consequences of instinctual life”, popular in the early Italian Renaissance, was “a suitable theme for this birth creator ... in the Florentine Bargello”. The master of the Bargello-Tondo painted other such valuable vessels that were given as gifts to wealthy patrician families. In them, women were given nutritious food to strengthen themselves after the birth of their child.

Since the well-known tondo is contained in the collection given to the city of Florence by Louis Carrand, the master of the Bargello tondo is sometimes also called the master of the Carrand tondo .
