Works (selection)

Other portraits are attributed to the master of the Brandon portrait by comparing styles:

  • Portrait of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk , private property
  • Portrait of Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham , private property
  • Portrait of a Young Man (Portrait of a young man with a Sampson Medal), Mauritshuis , The Hague, inv. No. 752
  • Portrait of John Bourchier, Baron Berners , National Portrait Gallery , London, inv. No.NPG 4953 (as an Unknown Dutch Painter )
  • Portrait of John Bourchier , private property

Style and identification

First, the portrait of Brandon was attributed to an unknown painter named Master of Queen Mary Tudor , then his painter was named after the portrait itself. The painting style of this master of the Brandon portrait is very close to that in the portrait paintings of the Flemish painter Gerard David, who works in Bruges . It can be assumed that the master is one of three Dutch painters who also worked in London, namely either Gerard Horenbout , the court painter of Margaret of Austria or his son Lucas Horenbout or Jan Rav, a painter who worked in the household of Charles Brandon can be detected as Joannes Corvus Flandrus.
