Master of the Eichstätter cathedral high altar
As a master of Eichstätter Domhochaltars will carver called, probably 1470-1480 five figures of the middle shrine of the high altar in the cathedral at Eichstätt has created. The very realistic, larger-than-life figures are considered to be an important work of South German late Gothic . They represent a Madonna on the crescent moon , surrounded by the patrons of the diocese of Eichstätt , Saint Richard and Saints Walburga , Willibald and Wunibald .
The figures of the master of the Eichstätter cathedral high altar were recast several times , in their present combination they were inserted into a neo-Gothic triptych in 1884 . The other medieval parts that were put together for this high altar are very likely by a different sculptor.
In addition to the figures of the cathedral high altar, the master of the Eichstätter cathedral high altar is also attributed the figure of Walburga from the crypt altar of St. Walburg in Eichstätt and a few other works such as four saints from a dismantled chapel that can be found today in the Marienkirche in Treuchtlingen .
It was suggested that the master described as a “brilliantly talented sculptor” is identical to Hans Bildschnitzer (or Hanns Pildschnitzer ), an artist who has been documented several times in Eichstätt since 1485. However, this remains controversial. The figures of the master of the Eichstätter cathedral high altar are stylistically in the same tradition as the works of Hans Multscher or Niclas Gerhaert van Leyden . The master shows a realistic conception of sculpture, as it was the style of the work of the other two sculptors.
