Master of Gijsbrecht van Brederode

Book of hours

A medieval illuminator from Utrecht in the 15th century is referred to as the Master of Gijsbrecht van Brederode ( Dutch Meester van Gijsbrecht van Brederode ) . The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from the book of hours he painted for the bishop of this Dutch city, Gijsbrecht van Brederode . The book is now in the possession of the University of Liège . Only a few other works by the master have been preserved, but together with the master of Evert Zoudenbalch , he is counted among the most important illuminators in Utrecht of his time. The fact that Gijsbrecht was able to commission him shows the wealth of this cleric and the importance of his cathedral in the mid-15th century. Also the by name unknown master of Evert Zoudenbalch got his name after a book created for another cleric of this cathedral, the cathedral provost Evert Zoudenbalch.
