A medieval illuminator from the Dutch city of Utrecht in the 15th century is referred to as the Master of Evert Zoudenbalch (from the left : Meester van Evert Zoudenbalch) .

The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from a history Bible that he painted for Evert Zoudenbalch around 1460. He was a provost of the cathedral in Utrecht from 1445 to 1503 . The text of the manuscript, written in Dutch and illuminated by the master, contains passages from the Bible and stories from the Alexander novel , passages from works by the ancient historian Flavius Josephus and from the Historia scholastica by Petrus Comestor . The book also contains a portrait of Evert Zoudenbalch. It is now in the possession of the Austrian National Library in Vienna.

A few other works are assigned to the master of Evert Zoudenbalch , especially books of hours such as the book of hours of Jan van Amerongen in the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels, but also the painting of secular manuscripts such as an astrology treatise from 1465/70, today in Wolfenbüttel in the Duke August Library . A panel painting in oil on wood in the possession of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam may also come from his hand, it depicts a crucifixion and is said to be stylistically similar to a crucifixion scene in one of the books of hours painted by the master.

The master of Evert Zoudenbalch , together with the master of Gijsbrecht van Brederode , is counted among the most important illuminators in Utrecht of his time. At that time the master of Otto van Moerdrecht was also active there. These city illuminators often cooperated with each other in the coloring of their works and contributed individual pictures to the work of other workshops.

Evert Zoudenbalch came from one of the city's wealthy families. The fact that he and other clerics of the city were able to commission a large number of manuscripts and their painting shows the fortune of the clergy and the importance of the cathedral in Utrecht in the mid-15th century.
