A north German painter from the late Middle Ages is known as the master of the Halepagen altar . The artist, whose name is not known for certain, painted an altar around 1500, which today is named after the Buxtehude Benedictine Gerhard Halepaghe depicted on the altarpiece . The altar for the St. Petri Church in Buxtehude is considered to be one of the main works of North German panel painting at the end of the Middle Ages and can still be seen in this church.

The master of the Halepagen altar is probably identical to Wilm Dedeke , from 1500 to 1520 master of the painter's office (north German for guild ) in Hamburg. The area around Henning von der Heyde should also come into question as the creator of the work.

The mayor of Hamburg , Hermann Langenbeck , commissioned and donated the Halepagen altar , who probably had his guardian Gerhard Halepaghe (or Halephagen) depicted on the left wing of the altar at the feet of the Apostle Paul in 1510 . St. Hieronymus depicted on the right wing is said to have the facial features of Langenbeck. The main panel and the four smaller pictures on the wings show the stations of Christ's passion .

In addition to the idea of ​​the heavenly mediation of salvation by saints in the piety of the time immediately before the Reformation , these images also show a bourgeois "profane need for representation".
