Gerhard Halepaghe (* 1420 in Buxtehude ; † April 1485 there ) was vicar at St. Petri Church and founder in Buxtehude.

Surname

The surname of Gerhard Halepaghe can be found as Halepaghe or Halepage or further also Halepaghen or Halepagen , as the name spelling could vary in the Middle Ages. Halepaghe himself also wrote Gherhardt Halepaghe.

The sentence name Halepaghe is composed of the old Low German words halen = fetch and page , m. = the horse, paghen in the accusative . Halepaghen means “fetch the horse”, which indicates a job as a groom, but above all the profession of a veterinarian and obstetrician. Gerhard Halepaghe had a horse in his coat of arms. The silver seal has been preserved to this day.

Life

After studying in Leipzig, he embarked on a three-year pilgrimage to Rome, where, by his own admission, he saw the Borgia Pope Calixtus .

In the second half of the 15th century he was involved in the reform of church and monastery life in the Lower Elbe region in the sense of a new piety ( Devotio moderna ). Joined the Bursfeld Union in 1469 , he turned against the abuse of church offices and, in his capacity as confessor and participant in visitations in the New Monastery near Buxtehude (founded in 1286) and other surrounding convents, campaigned for the observance of the rules of the order of St. Benedict von Nursia in its original purity and severity, as in the Old Monastery ("Altkloster", founded 1196) or the Lüne and Harvestehude monasteries .

Halepaghen Foundation

Gerhard Halepaghe came from a wealthy family, but lived frugally himself. He lent money to the farmers living in the Altes Land in exchange for a cash rent and used the income to give the vicars of Buxtehude, who used it to run several hospitals and a bathing room.

In his 240-page will, he donated his lands near Nincop in the Old Country to one third each for church purposes, for scholarships and for the welfare of the poor. The Halepaghen Foundation from 1484 is one of the oldest ecclesiastical foundations in Germany.
