Master of the Munderkinger Altar: Christ before Pilate, Swabia 1473

The medieval painter who painted a late Gothic winged altar for the parish church of St. Dionysius in Munderkingen near Ulm around 1473 is known as the master of the Munderkingen altar . The work by the artist who is not known by name, which was probably used as the high altar of the church, was removed during the Baroque period . The total of twelve pictures of the altar still preserved today are also known as the Munderkinger Passion , as they largely depict the passion of Christ. There are still eight of the Gothic panel paintings on the altar in the church on the side walls as stations of the cross, other pictures show saints.

The pictures by the master of the Munderkinger Altar are among the typical examples of Swabian painting of his time. The master might have his workshop in Ulm , Nördlingen or maybe in Kempten . It was suggested to see the master as a student or successor of Martin Schongauer , or to ascribe the work to Schongauer himself.

The panels can be dated to 1473 by inscription. The master of the Munderkinger Altar observed the figures of the Passion very closely and, as was customary in his time, depicted them in contemporary costume. Experts consider the pictures to be important models for replicas of clothing and armor in southern Germany in the late 15th century, the time the altar was made. The altar and the church are now considered a special attraction in the Alb-Danube district.
