Master with the embroidered leaves : Madonna enthroned under angels, Brussels, around 1500 - Musée du Louvre, n ° Inv RF 1973-35

The master with the embroidered foliage ( French Maître au feuillage brodé , English Master with the Embroidered Foliage ) was a painter who worked in Flanders around 1500 . With great certainty he had his workshop in Brussels.

Naming

The emergency name Meister with the embroidered foliage was given to the artist, who is not known by name, in 1924 by the art historian Max J. Friedländer , who summarized a series of pictures with common typical representation and painting style of foliage. In these paintings, for example, the foliage in the background forms a special form of “paradisiacal” foliage carpet.

Works (selection)

  • Madonna and Child ( triptych ), Polizzi Sicily, Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli
  • Madonna and Child , Bruges , Groeninge Museum
  • Madonna among Angels (triptych), Lille , Musée des Beaux-Arts
  • Madonna enthroned under angels , Paris , Louvre

The exact catalog of works of the master is further examined.

style

The master with the embroidered leaves is counted among the Flemish Primitives , a designation of the old Dutch painting. Stylistically he is close to the painter Gerard David , which is why a precise delimitation of some of his works to those of David is still being investigated. The type of Madonna depicted by the master is reminiscent of the work of Rogier van der Weyden .
