Master of Dingolfing
The late medieval carver who created two figures of saints around 1520 is known as the master of Dingolfing . These late Gothic wooden sculptures are located in the Church of St. John in Dingolfing and show the church patrons Evangelist John and John the Baptist . The almost life-size figures, for example, through the lifelike folds of their clothes and the realistic depiction of their hair, are an expression of the stylistic development of a rigid Gothic to soft, lifelike realism and are considered to be representatives of the Lower Bavarian “old style” carving culture at the transition to the new Renaissance epoch .
The name of the artist is not known, so he was given an emergency name after his work in Dingolfing . Possibly the master is Hans Leinberger .
Occasionally other works are ascribed to the master of Dingolfing by comparing styles.
