Master of Riglos: Dormition of Mary, around 1450

As a master of riglos ( Spanish maestro de Riglos, Catalan Mestre de Riglos) is a Gothic painter called, the 1435 to 1460 in the Kingdom of Aragon of medieval Spain was active.

The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after his altarpieces painted around 1450 for the monastery church of St Martin in Riglos in the province of Huesca . The altar was demolished in 1920, four of eight of his paintings have been preserved, these are now distributed among museums in London, Barcelona, Philadelphia and Bologna.

The master of Riglos and the discussion of his works and personality is of art historical interest, since his painting style is an example of the late Gothic in the Aragón region from 1450; one can also see the first signs of a new realism in the works, which indicates his encounter with Flemish painting of that time.

The catalog of works by the master von Riglos is continuously and critically examined. First, pictures were assigned to a master from Sant Quirze, before pictures were grouped around the alternatively proposed artistic personality of the master from Riglos . It was also suggested that some works in the master's catalog should actually come from Pedro de Zuera, a painter who can be traced back to Osca between 1430 and 1469. Art historical research then declared the pictures from the church in Riglos to be works of two hands, on the one hand pictures from the workshop of Blasco de Grañen, active in Saragossa from 1422 to 1459, and on the other hand pictures by the painter Pere Garcia de Benavarri, who can be verified at this time who had received his training in this workshop. However, the Master's identification is still being investigated.
